Vegetable Gardening at ALC HQ: Growing More Than Vegetables

Vegetable Gardening

Why the ALC HQ Garden Matters—For Us and Our Clients

At Allentuck Landscaping Co., we talk a lot about Improving Lives Through Landscaping. But that doesn’t just happen out in the field or on a client’s property. Sometimes, it happens right here at our own headquarters—through vegetable gardening in the rows of peppers, tomatoes, squash, and greens we’ve got growing behind the shop.

Yep, we’ve got a vegetable garden. And it’s not just for show. It’s for our team. And it’s become a quiet but powerful part of what makes working here a little different.

Here’s why it matters.

Healthy Eating, No Excuses

Vegetable Gardening

We know the drill. Summer hits, and meals get grabbed between job sites—fast food, snacks, energy drinks. Vegetable gardening isn’t going to solve all that, but it is a small step in the right direction. Team members are welcome (and encouraged) to take vegetables home to share with their families. There’s just something different about eating food that came from the ground, not a wrapper.

We hope this gets folks thinking more about what goes into their bodies—because strong bodies build better landscapes.

Growing Clean: Why Organic Matters

Our vegetable garden is 100% organic—no synthetic fertilizers, no harsh pesticides, just compost, care, and good old-fashioned know-how. That matters. It means the food our team takes home is clean and safe. It means pollinators like bees and butterflies can do their thing without risk. And it shows that sustainable vegetable gardening isn’t just possible—it’s practical. By growing this way, we’re protecting our team, supporting healthy ecosystems, and setting the example we want to see in the landscapes we build for others.

A Chance to Try Something New

Our garden isn’t just filled with the usual suspects. Sure, we’ve got tomatoes and peppers—but we’ve also grown eggplant, herbs, kale, and a few oddball crops just for fun. It’s an invitation to try something different. Roast something you’ve never cooked before. Introduce your kids to the concept of “food doesn’t come from a grocery store.”

If our team can get inspired by growing their own food, imagine what that spark could do for our clients. Raised beds, edible landscapes, kitchen gardens—these are things people want, and we know how to build them because we live it ourselves.

It’s a Hands-On Training Opportunity

Don’t overlook how much learning is packed into a 4×8 vegetable bed. Vegetable gardening is a crash course in soil health, irrigation, pest control, proper spacing, and seasonal timing. These are the same principles we apply when designing or maintaining a client’s landscape—just with a lower risk and zero client expectations.

Working in the garden gives team members a chance to tinker, test, and get better. Want to train newer crew members on plant care or maintenance techniques? The garden’s a perfect lab. Quality work starts with curiosity, and we’re building that here.

Stress Relief in the Dirt

Let’s be real—landscaping is intense. It’s hot, physical, and often unpredictable. Spending 10 quiet minutes in the garden, pulling a few weeds or watering rows, can be just the mental reset someone needs during a hectic day. It’s simple, grounding, and satisfying in a way not much else is.

This isn’t just good for our team—it’s a reminder we can pass on to our clients. Gardens aren’t just functional; they’re therapeutic. Helping people create outdoor spaces where they can decompress is one of the best parts of what we do.

At the End of the Day, We’re Gardeners

plans, the root of our work is the same—we’re gardeners. We care about the land, and we know what a well-loved outdoor space can do for a person’s life.

Our HQ garden might be small, but it’s full of meaning. Vegetable gardening brings us back to the basics. It feeds our team. It teaches us, grounds us, and even shows our clients that we walk the talk. We don’t just install beautiful landscapes—we live in them too.

Want a Garden Like This At Home?

Here’s the best part: what we’ve done at HQ isn’t hard to replicate. Whether a client has a big backyard or just a little patch near the kitchen door, we can help them build a vegetable gardening setup that fits their lifestyle. Raised beds, container veggies, edible borders—there are so many ways to blend beauty with utility.

Because sometimes, the best way to improve someone’s life through landscaping…
is to help them grow their own food.

This Is 40: The Story of Allentuck Landscaping 40th Anniversary

In 1986, Allentuck Landscaping Co. was founded on something simple: hard work and the desire to build something meaningful. But the story starts even earlier. When Bruce was just 15 years old, he and his best friends wanted to work. They started a small neighborhood business—“Odd Jobs Unlimited”—mowing lawns and taking on whatever projects they could find. At one point, they had nine kids working for them. It was scrappy, resourceful, and fueled by initiative. That entrepreneurial spirit never left.
