When our client decided to build a swimming pool, they wanted more than just a place to cool off—they envisioned a complete backyard retreat. Working hand in hand with both the homeowner and the pool construction company, Allentuck Landscaping Co. designed and built an outdoor living space that is as functional as it is stunning. The result is truly a swimming pool private retreat in Bethesda, MD.
Solving Site Challenges First
Before the fun part could begin, we had to tackle some serious site challenges. The property had drainage issues and uneven terrain that needed to be corrected to ensure the new pool and surrounding features would last. This was no small task.
Here’s what we did:
Installed a drainage system to move water away from the pool and patio, protecting the entire space from future water damage.
Leveled the area with Nicolock blocks and backfilled with soils, creating a strong, stable foundation for construction.
Building the Poolside Retreat
Once the groundwork was complete, it was time to create the living space around the pool. The design combines beauty, durability, and functionality, turning the yard into a true retreat.
Constructed a spacious paver patio that wraps around the swimming pool, providing plenty of room for lounging, dining, and entertaining.
Built a custom seat wall that defines the patio’s edge and offers comfortable built-in seating for gatherings.
Installed landscape lighting to highlight walkways, accent plantings, and create a welcoming glow for evening enjoyment.
Finishing Touches That Make the Difference
A retreat isn’t complete without the details that bring it to life. To soften the hardscape and create a sense of privacy, we incorporated layers of plantings that add color, texture, and beauty through every season. The combination of greenery, flowers, and lighting ensures the space feels just as inviting at night as it does during the day.
The Result
This project is more than just a backyard renovation—it’s a swimming pool private retreat in Bethesda, MD. By combining practical solutions like drainage and leveling with beautiful features like pavers, walls, plantings, and lighting, we created a space where the homeowners can relax, entertain, and enjoy time with family and friends all year long.

Backyard privacy shouldn’t be complicated. Homeowners just want a fast-growing, good-looking screen that blocks noise, hides neighboring windows, and makes a yard feel like a retreat. The best privacy trees can do all of that, and more. But not every evergreen behaves the same way. Some shoot up like rockets. Others handle cold better. Some stay dense year-round with almost no babysitting. Choosing the right one matters, or you’ll be staring at gaps, browning branches, or a tree that simply

There’s nothing quite like stepping onto your own patio for the first time. The smell of fresh stone, the way the space instantly feels like an outdoor living room — it’s where lazy Saturday mornings and long summer nights collide. But before that first step comes a much less glamorous (and far more important) one: planning. A patio isn’t something you wing. It’s something you design to fit your life. This custom patio planning checklist will walk you through the
