This year marked the 28th anniversary of Renewal & Remembrance, a day of service sponsored by the National Association of Landscape Contractors. Although our contingency from Allentuck Landscaping Co. was smaller this year, we were very proud to participate in enhancing two of America’s important landscapes and honoring our country’s veterans.
Our day began at 2:30 am as we unloaded and placed 13,000 plants at the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. The city is quite surreal in the early morning hours.
The monument is located near the United Stated Botanical Gardens just off the National Mall. Dedicated in 2014 by President Obama, it encompasses 2.5 acres of gardens, thought provoking quotes etched in glass, and a beautiful reflection pool.
As day broke and the sun began to heat up, 225 of our colleagues arrived on buses, eager to work. After a short opening ceremony, our army of landscapers were divided into five team, each assigned to a different area. Among the plants installed were large hollies, Dward Mondo Grass, Mazus, Hellebores and many other perennials that would bloom throughout the year.
The work went fast and the end results were beautiful. Knowing that he honored wounded veterans, and that the monument will look amazing in time for the 10th anniversary celebrating in October, left us both proud and humbled at the same time.
