Coneflowers Offer Fantastic Late Summer Garden Color

coneflower 3588688 1920Late summer can be a frustrating time in the garden. Some of our favorite plants are fading and the fall plants are just not quite in prime time yet. This is where Coneflowers come in. With a wide variety of color and size options, Coneflowers offer blooms that last from midsummer well into the fall.

Coneflowers originated on the prairies where they are native. Through cross hybridizing, growers have been able to take what was once only available in yellow and purple, have produced colors across the spectrum. As a result, we now have a vast array of colors available from this very easy to grow native plant.

Growing Coneflowers

Coneflowers require full sun but will tolerate a little sparse shade. Young plants require a little extra water but as they mature, coneflowers are one of the most drought tolerant plants available. The prefer well drained soil.

Pests and Diseases

Deer do not seem to bother mature coneflowers but some damage has been reported on younger, tender plants. As always, deer do not tend to read this blog and do not always adhere to these findings and may eat some leaves if they are hungry enough.

Other than that, not much bothers coneflowers!

Special Features

Coneflowers are excellent for attracting birds, butterflies and other pollinators. They may be used as cut flowers, in containers and in mass plantings. Coneflowers are also fragrant.
