6 Wonderful Plants For A Deer Resistant Screen

Rows of Cryptomeria Japonica

Got deer and need screening? Here is a list of 6 wonderful plants for a deer resistant screen.

Whether you’re looking to block off an ugly view, dampen noise pollution, or you simply desire some solitude, sometimes you just need a bit more privacy. There are many natural ways to enclose your property that are both visually pleasing and effective. These 6 plants are great screening options, even if you have deer!

Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica)

A slender, conical conifer (trying saying that three times fast!) with a slightly pendulous look, Japanese Cedar can grow 50’ tall. There are, however, smaller dwarf varieties that may be more appropriate for residential landscapes. The foliage is soft to the touch and turns slightly reddish for the winter.

Leatherleaf Viburnum (Viburnum rhytidophyllum)

This evergreen Viburnum (most are deciduous) has olive green leaves that form a great green wall for screening. White fragrant flowers in the spring are followed by red berries in the fall. By the way, birds tend to love these berries. Bonus! With a height of 6’ to 10’, it is an excellent full-coverage screening plant.

Skip Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Schipkaensis’

This broadleaf, thick, dense, evergreen shrub matures at 10’ to 12’ tall. Its foliage is a dark green-blue which can be a fantastic backdrop to flowering shrubs and perennials planted in front of it. A little warning – deer will nibble at the Skip Laurel but do not prefer its taste.

Little Gem Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’)

The belle of the south. Little Gem Magnolia is one of the most beautiful broadleaf evergreen shrubs. With gloss, dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers, Magnolias are a pleasure in any garden. The Little Gem variety grows 15’ to 20’ in height.

Northern Bayberry (Myrica pennsylvanica)

Northern Bayberry is a deciduous shrub so it may not be a suitable choice if you need screening during the winter. If this is not a concern, this plant is an excellent plant with gray-green, aromatic leaves. Its mature height is 8’ to 10’. One more benefit; the fruit is attractive to birds.

Moonglow Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum ‘Moonglow’ )

Exceptionally showy, Moonglow Juniper’s silvery blue foliage and broad pyramidal form makes a most attractive screen. This tough plant with dense branching grows to 20’ tall.

More to consider: although each of these plants can make a wonderful screen in their own right, some of the best privacy screen plantings we have seen involve using several varieties of plants used in groupings. After all, variety is the spice of life!
