Summer Flowering Shrubs To Brighten Your Garden

Summer is in full swing and so are some of the best summer flowering shrubs. If you are like most people, you may think the summer garden is limited to Crape Myrtles and Hydrangeas. Not true (although we did include a few on our list below). Here are some other excellent summer flowering shrubs for you to consider.

Abelia ‘Kaleidescope’ – Abelia x grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’

Not only does this care free plant show off with white flowers, its foliage is literally a kaleidoscope of colors. A low, compact, evergreen selection that works well as a foundation plant, low hedge, or for use in patio containers. Plant en masse as a groundcover or for dramatic year-round color.

 

 

Chaste Tree – Vitex agnus-castus

This garden shrub-tree has large terminal clusters of fragrant lilac-colored blooms, backed by aromatic gray-green foliage. Has a naturally broad and spreading, open, multi-trunk display. Use in a shrub border, or train for use as a small tree to accent the landscape or patio.

 

Pokomoke Crape Myrtle – Lagerstroemia indica ‘Pocomoke’

That’s right. A Crape Myrtle that is a shrub! This unique dwarf-size, multistemmed shrub with blooms of dark rosy pink flowers that bloom throughout the summer. The dark green foliage turns rich bronze-red in fall. Use in groupings, as an accent, or even in a container.

Pee Wee Oakleaf Hydrangea – Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Pee Wee’

At only 4’ tall, this shrub is much smaller than the standard Oakleaf Hydrangea and with four seasons of interest, worthy of consideration for any garden. white spring flowers that fade to pink, beautiful fall foliage, and cinnamon-colored bark in the winter.

 

Caryopteris ‘Longwood Blue’ – Caryopteris x clandonensis Longwood Blue

Truly one of our favorites. sky blue flowers atop silver foliage for a striking combination. Blue mist shrub is aptly named as it is covered in a cloud of blue from mid to late summer. The slight arching habit makes it fit beautifully into the perennial border. It is a well-behaved garden plant.

 

 

Hibiscus ‘Minerva’ – Hibiscus syriacus ‘Minerva’

This summer bloomer will take you back in time with an abundance of continuous flowers. Lavender flowers have a pink overlay and dark red eye. A dense habit of handsome, leathery, dark green foliage creates a wonderful informal hedge or screen.
