Meaningful Adjacencies – Our Day at Arlington National Cemetery

A Meaningful Day Serving At Arlington National Cemetery

When one sees over 400 landscape professionals roll out onto any property, it can be awe inspiring. When that property happens to be Arlington National Cemetery with over 400,000 American heroes interred there, well, words simply cannot explain one’s feelings.

That is the feeling I had as we sent our colleagues out into the cemetery for the National Association of Landscape Professional’s (NALP) 19th annual Renewal & Remembrance at Arlington National Cemetery. This was my third and final year as Chairman of the event and to be honest, I was somewhat overcome with emotion and pride. I was so proud of my industry and colleagues because I know the profound difference we make at these hallowed grounds each year.

In all, we touched over 1/3 of the 620 some acres by liming (80 tons of lime!), aerating, planting, pruning, cabling and installing lightning protection in trees and upgrading irrigation systems. Over 40 children took part in a planting project, laid a wreath at the Tombs of the Unknowns and got a close up look at a team of caisson horses.

One of the things I am most impressed with is the fact the these 400 plus volunteers come here each year at their own expense, many of them closingAllentuck Landscaping Co. Team at Arlington National Cemeterytheir businesses and leaving their families to do so, to work in 95 degree extremely humid weather. The selflessness of their actions alone is impressive. What they do in one day on the grounds is amazing.

Allentuck Landscaping Co. had eight of our team members participating in the event. They were on a planting crew and installed a beautiful garden in one of the columbarium.

As the day drew to a close, I thought back to something our association’s President Scott Jamieson said at the opening ceremony. He said that as Allentuck Landscaping Co. Team at Arlington National Cemeterywe look at the headstones in the cemetery, our eyes are naturally drawn to the birth date and the death date, but those do not tell the whole story. The story is told between those two dates, in how we live our life and the “meaningful adjacencies” that we develop. I feel truly blessed that taking part in Renewal & Remembrance is part of our story at Allentuck Landscaping Co. and that we have the opportunity to be “adjacent” to such fine team members, colleagues and customers. It is these meaningful adjacencies that make the story between our dates worthwhile.
