Fall Landscape Guide

These Fall Landscape Tasks Offer Big Impact

The fall landscape is one of the most pleasant times of the year to be in the garden. The air is crisp and the ground is soft. There is usually plenty of rain so any new plants go through less stress. Use our fall garden guide to plan out your work and to make sure your lawn and garden get all the care it needs.

Reinvigorate Your Lawn

fall landscapeGetting ones lawn in order and ready for the next spring is a big part of fall landscape work.

Summers are brutal on lawns in our area. There is either too much heat and not enough rain, or, in the case of the last two summers, too much water. As the saying goes, too much of anything is bad. Core aeration, applying lime and overseeding are among the best things that one can do to help the lawn recover and thrive.

Core aerating opens up the soil and essentially lets if breathe. This is very beneficial to encouraging strong root growth. Applying lime adjusts the acidity of the soil so grass can better take advantage of available nutrients. Overseeding increases the population of grass plants, which helps to squeeze out weeds.

If you are a TotalScape customer of Allentuck Landscaping Co., you will already be receiving these services this fall. If you are not, please give us a call for a free estimate.

One Final Pruning

Fall is an ideal time to take a good look at your shrubs and trees and give them one final pruning, thin out overgrown deciduous shrubs, shape plants that have gotten out of hand, cut back perennials that have already gone dormant, and cut out any dead wood in trees. Doing this kind of pruning will give your plants a head start come spring.

Mulch The Garden

Garden beds also take a beating throughout the year. Some mulch washes away, some dries up and looks bad. A fresh layer of mulch not only makes gardens look better, it helps protect plant roots and keep weeds down. Too much mulch, however is not a good thing so it may be necessary to remove some existing mulch prior to a new application. Like your mom always said, a made bed is a good way to start the day only in this case, it is the fall.

Add Some Colorful Annuals

Fall Landscape

Summer annuals will soon be fading. Very few things are sadder looking than dying flowers. Fall is a great time to add color using pansies, dianthus, ornamental cabbage and kale, and chrysanthemums. There is such a multitude of colors available and unlimited combinations to be made that fall gardens can look stunning well into the cold.
