So Much Flowering In Maryland Gardens
May is like the Super Bowl of flowering plants. Look around our neighborhood. There are so many shrubs, perennials, bulbs and trees in bloom. This blog is intended to help you identify what is in bloom in Maryland Gardens right now so you can consider these plants for your garden.
Shrubs
- Pieris – A member of the Azalea family, the drooping blossoms of Pieris more resemble the Lily Of The Valley. New growth is crimson color adding one more benefit. Oh yeah, and deer do not eat it!
- Lilac – One of the favorite fragrances in the garden, these sweet smelling flowers are like purple feathers at the end of the branches.
- Azalea – Even if you are not a golf fan, one cannot help but admire the multi-colors of the Azaleas seen at the Master’s Tournament. Why not welcome these stunning plants into our own garden.
Perennials
- Creeping Phlox – Pinks, whites and lavenders flow like a carpet of color over the ground. Perfect for garden borders and rock gardens.
- Bleeding Heart – A really interesting plant, the booms are pink ad heart shaped, dangling from the stems like little earings.
- Celandine Poppy – Imagine these bright yellow poppies in your woodland garden. They are a show stopper!
Bulbs
- Allium – Also known as Ornamental Onion, the purple flowers form a globe shape on a long stalk giving your garden a fairy tale look.
- Tulip – Available in almost every color imaginable, this gift from Holland brighten ever garden they are in.
- Grape Hyacinth – Tiny collections of little blueish-purple beads spring up in the garden. With any luck, the spread and grow in area each year.
Trees
- Kwanzan Cherry – Last month we enjoyed the Yoshino Cherry. Now it is time for the Kwanzan Cherry. A little bit deeper pink, this tree is something to look forward to every spring.
- Redbud – Nobody notices the Redbuds until they are in flower and then everyone loves them. Red buds open to purple blooms that literally line the spreading branches.
- American Dogwood – A true workhouse of the garden. Not only do we get to enjoy the white blooms in the spring, the red berries and maroon fall leaves make the American Dogwood a garden favorite.
