Project Profile: Small Space Backyard Landscape in Frederick, Maryland

Small Space Backyard Landscape

A Small Space Backyard Landscape Presents Special Challenges

Small Space Backyard LandscapeSmall spaces can present big challenges, and big opportunities. On one hand, customers still want lots of features that go into most landscapes; space for seating, access and plantings among others. On the other hand, because of the limited space, there are only so many options on where these features can go. This was the case with our customer in Frederick, Maryland.

This particular property was a blank slate with one major exception, a drainage swale running right through the middle of it. The water that flows through the swale during rain storms could not be interrupted or there would be major problems which would not only affect our customer, but her neighbors as well.

Through design collaboration between our team members Tim Carbis and Bobby Sullivan, the design for this backyard was created.

A gravel sitting area was created under the deck and next to the house. To account for the drop in grade, a low stacked stone wall was built to level this area out. A Pennsylvania flagstone walkway gracefully leads from the home’s rear door to the door of the detached garage. Techo Bloc Rocha Steps were used to help mitigate the grade changes.

In order to protect the water flow in the swale, Delaware River Gravel was installed to slow down the flow of water as well as for aesthetics. The gravel creates a really nice change in texture for the project. A drain pipe was placed under the walkway to allow the water to continue through the swale.

Plantings were chosen to provide color and interest during the summer, when the area would most likely be used. Crape Myrtles and Endless Summer Hydrangeas will mature and really make the backyard shine. The addition of Japanese Painted Ferns offered an excellent texture along with brightening up the area with its silver foliage.

Although this is a small space, Tim and Bobby created a landscape that our customer will enjoy for years to come.

What to Look for When Hiring A Hardscape Contractor Near You (and What to Avoid)

Every company says they’re “the best,” every ad promises “premium craftsmanship,” and all the websites start to blur together after a while. But here’s the truth: not all hardscape contractors are the same. Some will turn your backyard into a place you’ll love for years. Others? They’ll leave you with uneven pavers, poor drainage, and a mess that costs twice as much to fix.
