The Area Under Your Deck May Be Outdoor Living Space You Didn’t Even Know You Had

One of the most underutilized spaces in the landscape is the area under the deck. This space could make for a wonderful are to chill and enjoy. When dreaming of outdoor living spaces you would like to see in your back yard, why not take advantage of the most overlooked space? The majority of homeowners think it’s good for nothing more than storing yard and garden tools, children’s toys, or overwintering patio furniture. We think it may actually be a hidden gem.

Is There Enough Space

The first consideration is deciding whether or not there is enough headroom. Have a cool and shady spot is great, but not if it feels damp and cramped. Ideally, the best spaces are at least eight or nine feet high. This kind of height will make for a comfortable outdoor room.

Consider The Floor

Just like any outdoor patio, there are a number of flooring options. Flagstone and brick pavers are typically the most popular and versatile possibilities. Both can be set on aggregate material or on concrete depending upon desired style and budget constraints. Stamped concrete also offers many options worthy of consideration. Lastly, if a more informal feel is desired, there are many gravels that can be used for the floor as well.

The underside of a deck can be a rather gloomy area. This can be altered by either staining or painting the deck’s framework. Additionally, there are several underdeck ceiling and gutter systems that can hide the framework and channel water to downspouts.

Air Movement

A nice ceiling fan, or even several fans, will keep air moving and help keep the area cool. This is makes the space even more functional during hot summer days and evenings. With the technology available these days, remote controls and timers make it even easier to enjoy your outdoor living room.

Lighting

There is no reason to limit your outdoor living room to daytime use only. Add lights to make it a delightful place in the evenings too. Soft lighting from the ceiling can set a wonderful mood for dining or just hanging out.
