A Secluded Brick Patio in Georgetown

A Brick Patio Gets A New Life

Brick Patio
Before

When we first laid eyes on the existing brick patio, it was astonishing to see how tree roots had literally destroyed it. The roots from the large Cherry tree in the middle of the patio had lifted up the bricks making the patio virtually unusable. To make matters worse, the tree’s health was suspect and the city would not allow it to be removed.

Just to complicate the situation, the backyard could only be accessed through a long pedestrian alley that was wide enough to fit a wheelbarrow through. All of the neighbor’s

trash cans were also in this alley. They would need to be wheeled out of the alley each morning and put back each evening.

All of this combined for a challenging situation to be solved.

The solution, a two tier patio. By raising most of the patio up one step, or 6”, the bricks we able to be set above the tree roots. We decided to use Techo-Bloc Rocka edging for the step because it looked really good with the client’s bricks. The Rocka edging was continued around the entire patio to completed the look and create a consistent appearance.

Our team carefully lifted all of the existing bricks and neatly stacked them in any available space. The existing sub-base was removed and wheelbarrowed out through the alley to our trucks. In the lower section of the patio, a new surface

drain was installed to prevent water from backing up into the house. This drain was tied into an existing drain line. The new sub-base materials were wheelbarrowed, graded out and thoroughly compacted. With the Rocka edging in place, the bricks were finally re-installed.

The results, a beautiful and very usable patio in the heart of Georgetown that will be enjoyed for years to come.
