5 Ways To Eliminate Mosquitoes

Proven Methods To Get Rid Of Mosquitoes

The stings of mosquitoes can ruin the time you spend outdoors. On top of that, they are vectors for some very serious diseases. Luckily, there are ways you can combat these pesky pests without a lot of work.

Eliminate Standing Water

Standing water provides an ideal place for mosquitoes to lay eggs, producing hundreds of more mosquitoes in a very short period of time. Eliminate any and all standing water by emptying out the bottoms of flower pots, pet bowls and watering cans. Make sure there is no standing water in lawns and gardens. If there is, re-grade as needed. One other often overlooked potential area is the house gutters. If they are not completely draining, consult a gutter company to correct the gutter’s pitch.

BasilUse Plants That Naturally Repel

There are many plants that naturally repel mosquitoes. These include Marigolds, Basil and Lemon Balm to name a few. See our blog post 10 Plants That Repel Mosquitoes for a more complete list. Use these plants near wherever you and your family spends time. If out in the yard, plant them in adjacent garden beds. If on the patio, integrate them into your flower pots.

Remove Leaf Litter

Leaf litter provides another haven for mosquitoes to reproduce and seek shelter. Remove any area of leaf litter that may be in your garden beds. Be sure to include areas under decks and around firewood stacks.

Citronella candles and tiki torches not only create ambiance, the repel mosquitoes and other annoying insects. Place them around the patio about thirty minutes prior to using the space. This will help assure that the mosquitoes are long gone before you are there. Remember to use good fire prevention practices to avoid a mishap.

Organic Treatments

There are several products available to use around a property to eliminate ticks, gnats and ticks. These usually involve equipment that creates a mist to adequately cover all areas. Our favorite product contains cedar oil. It is organic, safe, effective and actually smells very pleasant (like a cedar chest). If used regularly it is very effective at combating mosquitoes.
